To Do Lists
In just under two weeks I’m going in for surgery, and the “to do” list reads more like I was going away on a two week vacation than for a “simple” procedure.
...
Between the pre-op appointments, packing, laundry, stocking up of groceries and other arrangements, I am wandering around my life muttering like a crazy person having a debate with a parking meter. Yesterday I caught myself wandering down the hallway of my workplace reciting a set of tasks I needed to get done, and this morning I woke up and my first thought was whether I can get away with wearing pajamas home from the hospital. This madness has to end!
With a list of chores and plans that vary from merely mundane to the utterly boring, there is one that I am doing my damndest to ignore. Before I go under the knife, I need to review my Will and make sure that everything is still in order. Oh sure, the mortality rate for this particular surgery is less than 1%, and the odds are very good that I will not be shuffling off this mortal coil, but still, its got to be done. Sealed away in a manila envelope are my last wishes and instructions, and I have a serious aversion to opening it. I know Death is not going to appear if I pull out the handful of pages, his bony hand isn’t going to point my way and tell me my time has come. Reading over the “to do” list laid out in case my plan to live forever doesn’t end well still doesn’t fill me with joy. Still, somewhere between buying frozen pizza and packing my stuffed dragon “Dwake” for the trip to the hospital, I’m going to have to make time for reviewing my Will. I already told my parents it would be on the fridge in case something happened, and let me tell you that’s not a conversation that’s easy to drop into. “So I’ll be out by 2 pm or so and hey, if I don’t wake up the Will is under the butterfly magnet on the fridge door,” is a bit of a conversation stopper.
Maybe I’ll do that tonight. Nope, I just checked my list, and apparently tonight I am committed to tracking down a DVD of every movie I’ve missed in the past few years. If I’m going to be stuck home for days, I am going to catch up! If anyone has any recommendations? Feel free to toss them in the comments.
