Today would have been my little brother’s thirty-seventh birthday. I’ve spent a lot of time today thinking about him and wishing he were still here.

Today would have been my little brother’s thirty-seventh birthday. I’ve spent a lot of time today thinking about him and wishing he were still here.
It snowed last night, and once again I found myself filled with childlike glee to see the world turning white. I do not know what it is about snow that does this to me, but it happens every time.
It was early enough in the morning that there were only a few people out on the beach, runners mostly, getting in their miles before they headed off to work. A black lab barked in a frenzy of joy, chasing a Frisbee as it is hurled into the waves by his owner. Further down the beach several tanned surfers gathered, laughing and joking before they headed into the water and out towards the surf.
A poem composed while walking over a bridge, in the dark, in a fog so thick it seemed a living thing. By the time I got to work the poem was finished, and it was all I could do not to bolt for the door inside.
