The old bard leans back in his chair, a mug of ale in his hand. He drinks deeply from his mug and then looks sadly into the now empty bottom of it.
"The Rule of Darien the First was a fine time, a time of story and legend. For a silver coin and another ale, I'll tell you what started it all, the disaster than nearly destroyed the empire but in the end, drew us all together once more."

"There was once a terrible wizard they called the Sword Mage, as twisted and evil a soul who ever was involved in spellcasting, who was feared by almost everyone. He lived in the land of Ghoere when it was strong and prospering under the Iron Baron, Gavin Tael, who ruled with an iron fist.

Now this wizard dabbled in the darkest of arts, including the summoning of demons and binding them to his will. He learned from another master, a demonologist named Harkon. Now Harkon dabbled too long in the dark and lost his mind to madness, barking and babbling to the end of his days. When he was rescued by the Western Imperial Temple, he was found in the garden of the crazy wizard Mhisticai of Mieres, living in a little red doghouse. He spent his final days cared for by the kind priests and Priestesses who kept him clean and well groomed. His student though... his fate was far worse."
The old man thanks the barmaid with a nod as she brings him another mug of ale. He sips from it slowly, gathering his thoughts.

The old bard straightens up, pleased to see some many people gathering about for the rest of his tale. He grins at the crowd.

The Sword Mage sought power and began to study the Shadow Realm, and the other dark places demons come from. He learned of great and powerful demons.... Dark and powerful beyond anything in Anuire. In his greed and arrogance, he sought such power! He summoned one dread creature, and nearly doomed all of Anuire. This demon was too powerful to be contained by the spells of this world, and he broke free of the Sword Mage's control and protective circle within moments of his summoning. He consumed all of the Sword Mageís soul in the process!

The old man pauses to drink again.

Using what was left of the wizard as a shell to contain his essence, the Demon expanded his power in the span of a few minutes, drawing the life out of the very land of Ghoere and attempting to drag the entire place out of the plane we live on and into the Demonís own realm. He failed though, for Ghoere was too large for one of even his power to transport completely. Trapped between worlds, a barrier of mist appeared at the edges of Ghoere, a barrier that the demon could not cross. Inside Ghoere, the land died, as did all of the living. Those with the blood of the gods in their veins awoke to find themselves changed, becoming undead creatures that survived in the nightmare twilight that was their new world. The Iron Baron became a vampire, his court reduced to a few who suffered the same affliction. Outside the occasional zombie or ghost fluttered by, and each province was looked after by a powerful spectre. The High Priest of Haelyn's Aegis became a death knight, his tortured soul forever severed from his beloved Lord Haelyn. The High Priest of the Militant Order became a phantasm, a ghost without substance or form. As for the Sword Mage, he became something truly terrible, a lich with a demon possessing him.

The old bard bares his teeth.

The demon was not done however. The few that wandered into Ghoere's mists fed his hunger, but they were far too few to power him. With great desperation, the dark creature began to seek a way to free himself from the boundry of the mists. His dark power slowly began flowing through the ley lines that the Sword Mage had once possessed. As he sought to find a way to flow with the power out of Ghoere and free himself from the boundaries of the mists, his realm of death grew within the mists as Endier fell to his power. The Count became another sad undead, his land and riches lost. But the demon was not free, the mists expanded to encompass the demons territory.

He shakes his head sadly.

As Dark Azrai laughed and helped strengthen the spider, the Gods took action of their own, sending Laerme down to help the people of Anuire.
The goddess of Fire and passion began to manifest herself in Anuire once more Priestesses of the nearly invisible temple of flame suddenly appeared in the Imperial City.

It was Laerme , beloved of Cuiraecen, that taught us to sever the ley lines and protect the rest of Anuire. And in the end it was Laerme who helped the College of Sorcery band together with the Temples to bring about the end of the demon and draw Ghoere and Endier back from their nightmare.

Then it was that the battle was truly joined, for the vampire Baron and his undead consort Aubrae, the count, the Lich with his undead army, none of them were going down without a fight, and all of them had the darkest of powers at their disposal."

The bard grins. "But that's another story."

And Daulton Flaertes became a death knight, leading his undead knights in service of the demon.

Harald Khorien lost a bat familiar that he recruited for the sole purpose of sacrificing to the Mists much to the upset of the Familiar Gods.

A year and a day later, he does the same thing. I was tempted to have an undead bat come to serve him. Or a guinea pig.

Harald's overly complex plan for a fast retrieval system saved himself from the doom of going into the Mists and running into the spectre Count of Endier and his minions...

Oh. I would have thought it was Ravenloft, but I guess that would've been too cheesy, now wouldn't it?

Hmm...sounds like I need to do that myself, then!

I expected as much to happen. I didn't know what would happen to young Dalton, I did know he would turn (based on the undead coming out and the 'those with bloodlines seem to survive.') I rather doubted he would be bloodtheft, my running theory was his bloodline being corrupted to Azrai and coming out of the Mists with 'information.'

But becoming a death knight is much cooler. Wink
